EXAM PREPARATIONS

PLEASE NOTE:

FULL PREP INSTRUCTIONS ARE IN EACH PREP KIT

CT: Head, Chest and Upper Abdomen
Night before exam: Eat, drink anything you desire.
Take one Tagamet and one Vistaril at bedtime.

Day of exam: Do not eat 4 hours prior to exam time.
Take one Tagamet 2 hours Prior to CT scan.
Do not drink 2 hours prior to exam time.

CT: Abdomen and Pelvis or Pelvis Only

Night before exam: Eat, drink anything you desire.
Take one Tagamet and one Vistaril at bedtime.
Day of exam: Do not eat 4 hours prior to exam time.
Take one Tagamet 2 hours Prior to CT scan.
Drink the oral contrast 2 hours prior to exam time.
No more liquids are to be consumed.

Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)

Day before exam: Normal breakfast, light lunch
Clear liquids only after 2:00 p.m. (No pulp or food particles, etc.)
Take two Bisacodyl laxative tablets at 2:00 p.m.
Night before exam: Take one Tagamet and one Vistaril at bedtime.
Day of exam: Take one Tagamet 2 hours prior to IVP
DO NOT EAT OR DRINK.

Barium Enema (B.E.)

Two days before exam: Normal breakfast, light lunch, Clear liquids only, following lunch
(No pulp or food particles, etc.)
Day before exam: Continue clear liquid diet.
At noon drink one bottle of Magnesium Citrate.
Take four Bisacodyl laxative tablets at 5:00 p.m.
Day of exam: Continue clear liquid diet.

Upper G.I. Series

 Day of exam:  Nothing to eat or drink 5 hours prior to exam.

MRI: Notify MD if you have any of the following:

  • Pacemaker
  • Intracranial Aneurysm Clips
  • Cardiac Valve Prosthesis
  • Metal Stapes Replacement
  • Limb Prosthesis Pine, Plates, Screws, Staples From Recent Surgery, IUD, Pessary
  • Implanted Defibrillator or Neurostimulator
  • Pregnancy

Ultrasound:

Abdomen
Liver
Gallbladder
Spleen
Aorta
Pancreas
Adrenal
Nothing by to eat or drink after midnight the night before the procedure.

Ultrasound:

Kidney
Carotids
Thyroid
Scrotal
Breast
 No prep required

Ultrasound:

OB/Pelvic  May eat breakfast and/or lunch (unless scheduled ofr other exams), Drink four 8 oz glasses of liquid in 20 minutes. Be finished drinking 1 hour before test time. DO NOT URINATE. Must have full bladder for exam.

Mammogram:

Day of exam: Please obtain any previous mammograms. No lotion, deoderant or talc from neck to waist.

Needle Localization:

Day of exam: Please obtain any previous mammograms. Your surgeon will go over these instructions with you.

Fine Needle Aspiration:

Day of exam: Please obtain any previous mammograms. May eat breakfast and/or lunch (unless scheduled for other exams). Do not take aspirin or coumadin (blood thinners).

Stereotactic Biopsy:

Day of exam: Please obtain previous mammograms. You will be positioned face down on your abdomen so please let us know if you have any physical limitations.
May eat breakfast and/or lunch (unless scheduled for other exams).
Do not take aspirin or coumadin (blood thinners).
For your comfort, wear a two piece outfi and a loose bra.
