EXAM PREPARATIONS
PLEASE NOTE:

FULL PREP INSTRUCTIONS ARE IN EACH PREP KIT

CT: Head, Chest and Upper Abdomen, CT IVP

Day of exam:

Do not EAT or DRINK 2 hours before the exam.

CT: Abdomen and Pelvis or Pelvis Only

Day of exam:

Do not EAT or DRINK 2 hours before the exam.

Oral contrast - pick up at any Imaging location by the day before exam. Complete drink prep 2 hours before exam.

Magnesium citrate - standard prep for outpatients

TWO DAYS PRIOR TO EXAMINATION

  • Pick up Prep Kit provided by Department

DAY PRIOR TO EXAMINATION

  • Take all prescribed medication by your doctor as normally scheduled.if you are a Diabetic,please consult your physicion for instructions on your diabetic medication.
  • Before 11am take the two Bisacodyl tablets(5mg each) with 1 glass(8 ounces) of clear liquids.
  • At 12 noon follow a clear liquid diet all day (broth, clear jicices-apple,cranberry,Gatorade, coffee,tea,jello,sodas,crystal lite,Italian ices,popsicles,etc.) No pulp Juices or dairy.
  • At 3-5pm drink two 296ml megnesium citrate(oral laxative) diluted in 8oz of liquid or drink alone.
  • At 6-8pm drink 250ml of 2% barium (CT oral contrast).
  • At 9-11pm drink 60ml of diatrizoate(gastroview) diluted in 8 oz of liquid.

NOTE:It is necessary to drink at least eight 8oz glasses of juice,soda,crystal lite,etc. Please follow prep carefully. It is very important to the accuracy of the test.

Drink liquids will prevent dehydration and / or mineral loss from the blood.

Please bring previous CT Virtual Colonoscopy scans or ABDOMEN CT scans from other facilities if not done at Boca Raton Regional Hospital.

Polyethylene glycol(PEG)-only for outpatients who are severely compromised and cannot tolerat mild fluid or electrolyte shifts.

TWO DAYS PRIOR TO EXAMINATION

DAY PRIOR TO EXAMINATION

  • Take all prescribed medication by your doctor as normally scheduled.if you are a Diabetic, please consult your physicion for instructions on your diabetic medication.

  • At 3-5pm Drink 4 Liters of polyethylene glycol(PEG)(oral Laxative).
  • At 6-8pm drink 250ml of 2% barium (CT oral contrast).
  • At 9-11pm drink 60ml of diatrizoate(gastroview) diluted i 8 oz of liquid.

Barium Enema (B.E.)

Two days before exam:

You may have a light breakfast and a light lunch. At 5:00 pm start a clear liquid diet. No milk products or cream except for skim milk. Clear liquids may include water, clear broth, bouillon, clear fruit juices such as apple and cranberry (juices with pulp are not acceptable), soft drinks, black coffee, tea, honey, sugar, jello, gatorade, crystal light, italian tea, clear hard candy and alcoholic drinks. You may have as much of these liquids as desired until the time of examination.

Day before exam:

1. Continue with clear liquid diet. Try to drink at least 8 ounces of liquid every hour. You may take more than this amount of fluid, but do not take less. The fluid is important to be sure your body does not become dehydrated and aids in cleaning your bowels for the examination. 

2. At approximately 12:00 noon, take one bottle of magnesium citrate. Shake well and drink entire contents. Immediately follow with one full glass of water. Eat a clear liquid meal; continue the clear liquid diet. 

3. At 5:00 pm eat a clear liquid meal. After eating, take four bisacodyl tablets (dulcolax). Swallow tablets whole with a full glass of water. Continue the clear liquid diet. 

Please note: take all medication prescribed by your doctor as directed except fiber medication.

Day of exam:

If desired, you may have a clear liquid breakfast.

Upper G.I. Series

Morning Exam: Nothing to eat or drink after midnight. 

Afternoon Exam: Nothing to eat or drink 5 hours prior to exam. 

No Milk products. Clear liquids only for breakfast.

MRI: Notify MD if you have any of the following:

  • Pacemaker
  • Intracranial Aneurysm Clips
  • Cardiac Valve Prosthesis
  • Metal Stapes Replacement
  • Limb Prosthesis Pine, Plates, Screws, Staples From Recent Surgery, IUD, Pessary
  • lmplanted Defibrillator or Neurostimulator
  • Pregnancy

Ultrasound:

Abdomen, Liver, Gallbladder, Spleen, Aorta, Pancreas, Adrenal

Nothing by to eat or drink after midnight the night before the procedure.

Ultrasound:

Kidney, Carotids, Thyroid, Scrotal, Breast

No prep required

Ultrasound:

OB/Pelvic

May eat breakfast and/or lunch (unless scheduled ofr other exams), Drink four 8 oz glasses of liquid in 20 minutes. Be finished drinking 1 hour before test time. DO NOT URINATE. Must have full bladder for exam.

Mammogram:

Day of exam:

Please obtain any previous mammograms. No lotion, deoderant or talc from neck to waist.

Needle Localization:

Day of exam:

Please obtain any previous mammograms. Your surgeon will go over these instructions with you.

Fine Needle Aspiration:

Day of exam:

Please obtain any previous mammograms. May eat breakfast and/or lunch (unless scheduled for other exams). Do not take aspirin or coumadin (blood thinners).

Stereotactic Biopsy:

Day of exam:

Please obtain previous mammograms. You will be positioned face down on your abdomen so please let us know if you have any physical limitations. May eat breakfast and/or lunch (unless scheduled for other exams). Do not take aspirin or coumadin (blood thinners). For your comfort, wear a two piece outfi and a loose bra.
