Positive Axumin scans may demonstrate a site of focal increased activity, suggestive of recurrent prostate cancer. Correlation with dedicated pelvic/prostate MRI is advised for correlation and required for fusion purposes if biopsy and fiducial marker placement is desired.
Due to the high likelihood of recurrent disease in the prostatic resection bed, deep within the pelvis, or within a pelvic lymph node, standard CT-guided percutaneous biopsy may be prohibited due to intervening bowel, blood vessels or bone.
MRI/US fused transperineal technology offers an alternative biopsy and fiducial placement technique, allowing increased accessibility to traditionally difficult to target pelvic lesions.
